  1. Why choose natural gas matched with carbon offsets for your home?

    ^ top

Our carbon offset products allow you to minimize your carbon footprint and support cleaner air and water by matching your natural gas usage with locally-sourced CleanSteps® or Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy.

  2. What is a carbon offset?

    ^ top

A carbon offset represents a greenhouse gas emission reduction made in one place to compensate for emissions created in another place. Each offset means that one metric ton (about 2,200 pounds) of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases did not escape into the air. Instead, specific actions have prevented, avoided or stored this metric ton of emissions. The environmental benefit of one carbon offset is comparable to taking an average car off the road for over two months.

  3. What makes carbon offsets from WGL Energy unique?

    ^ top

CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy are independently verified and sourced from current, ongoing activities such as landfill gas capture and destruction projects, plus they go one step further by also including investments in activities such as tree plantings that improve air and water quality.

  4. How does WGL Energy fund new clean air and water projects?

    ^ top

WGL Energy and its clean energy partner, Sterling Planet, jointly invest a portion of the proceeds into the Carbon Reduction Fund every time carbon offsets are purchased. The carbon reduction fund is central to the program's long-term benefits. The investments made by WGL Energy and Sterling Planet into the Carbon Reduction Fund are managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and go toward new projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also helping to improve air and water quality in the Chesapeake Bay region. To date over 19,000 trees have been planted throughout the region as a result of this partnership.
